Making Good Habits: Never Assume Anything

I’ll be the first to admit I’m not perfect.

No one is perfect.

This is just a fact of life.

One of the reasons I know I’m not perfect is the amount of times which life teaches me a lesson.

The worst part about these life lessons is they usually end up “okay”. However, the actions leading to the resolution usually make it a lot more complicated, awkward and guilt-ridden than they should have been.

Lucky for me, I haven’t permanently messed anything up. Yet.

One thing I know I’ve struggled with as an adult is being aware of how my actions affect others.

Assuming one thing will not automatically guarantee it will work out. Situations are rare when everyone is thinking the same thing.

Speaking of assumption…. Let me tell you a short story…

I remember Vanessa and I were on a trip to Paris for an Allstate Inner Circle trip. As we were walking in the Paris airport before we boarded for home, we noticed other Allstate agents and their wives following us. We were the “leaders” of the group.

I turned around and asked them if I could help them and the response I got was “We were following you because we thought you knew where you were going!” I replied, “we are looking for the bathroom!” I guess those guys felt a little weird assuming we knew where we were going!

Always challenge the norm and seek out the answers for yourself. Follow no one blindly. Do nothing without first seeking to understand why. Always keep an open mind and most importantly, believe in yourself and the fact that you are different and what you think matters more than what society says.
