Becoming a Better Leader

Do you want to become a better leader? It can be done.

No matter where you are in your leadership journey, you can move forward. It’s not something that just happens overnight. Sometimes it isn’t easy. It takes time, experience, training, discipline, and a few other things.

Before becoming the leader that you want to be, here are a few things you must do:

  • Count the cost - Leadership is hard but you chose it. You chose it because you want to lead people and improve their lives. A leader like you sees the higher ground that other people cannot see, and you desire to take them there. It will take time and money. It will drain your strength and energy. You must prepare yourself for the cost of leadership.
  • Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses - Some potential leaders end up failing because they’re not honest with themselves about what their weaknesses are. If you know your strengths, you know where to focus your energies to become more successful. If you know your weaknesses, you can hire to cover them, as well as improve upon them.
  • Cultivate a learning attitude - Leaders know that no matter how much they know, no matter how much they’ve learned, there’s still more to know and more to learn. Never think that just because you’re doing better than someone else, that they have nothing for you to learn from. Always be open to the possibility of learning, and correcting, what you know.
  • Procure a love for people - You don’t lead a business. You lead people. Others can tell intuitively whether we care for them and have their best interests at heart. If they do not know that we care for them, they will not follow. Leadership is the art of guiding people we care for and desire to help. If you have an issue with people, chances are you are not ready to lead them. To prep yourself for leadership, develop a love for people. If the other things are in place, then they will want to follow you.
  • You can become a leader. If you are already a leader, you can become better. Take a long, hard look at yourself and see if there are any areas you need to prepare yourself for leadership.
