Getting Punched in the Face

by Bill Gough, Insurance Hall of Fame Agent

Mike Tyson famously said, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.”

Last fall Vanessa and I were staying at the same hotel as her beloved Auburn Tiger football team as they hosted their archrival Georgia Bulldogs the next day.

We shared an elevator ride with Auburn’s Kevin Steele, one of the best defensive coordinators in college football. I commented to Coach Steele that I knew he had a terrific plan for the Bulldog offense. His reply was similar Tyson’s above, “the plan is easy, it’s when the game begins, and we see new formations, plays, tricks, etc. that forces us to change on the fly as the game proceeds.”

With COVID-19, the world and all of us got punched in the face.

Plans you previously made now may not apply.

But you know what?

Though this is like a punch to the face, you can prosper during these difficult times.

This crisis is a great opportunity to push passed fear.

Surprisingly to some of you, I have seen several instances to call the crisis a gift in some ways. For example, one of my best friends and a former business partner is in a very serious condition. One of the last things he needs is for the hundreds of friends, including me, dropping by visiting him when the most important thing he needs now is rest.

Listen, I’m not minimizing the challenges in your business right now. But instead of feeling like you’re walking down a dark alley all alone not knowing what’s ahead, know that you are NOT alone. We are all walking side by side with you.

Everyone is watching how business owners respond to the pandemic. We have all seen the criticism and the praise different business owners are receiving.

You can win here by remaining calm, focused and make the most of the time you are given.

I can think of no time in my life where it has been as important for you to be in consistent contact with your clients, prospects, and centers of influence as it is now. I have always placed a high value on consistent communication as many of you have seen with the BGI Auto Email Marketing System. For over 12 years, I have created content and shared it with agents across the country.
